Protective Mares

Mares can be very protective of their foals.  Some mares will attack anyone who comes near her foal.  A very protective mare can be extremely dangerous to any person.

Before the Birth

Before birth, mares will start to gain weight in their hindquarters and their belly with start to get rounder.  They will start to not care what you do to them.  My horse Jasmine was pregnant and was not trained.  We put a saddle on her, I rode her, and she didn't buck.  This shows how much a pregnant mare doesn't care what you do to them before birth.

After the Birth

After the birth, mares get very protective and really care about what you do to them and their foal.  They'll chase off other horses just to protect their baby.  After Jasmine had her baby, we tacked her up and I got on her thinking she wouldn't do anything.  Instead, she started bucking and I had to jump off.  This shows you that even though your mare let you on her while she is pregnant, she might not let you back on after she has her foal.
