Eating Habits

Horses are grazers.  They eat many things.  They eat grain, hay, grass, alfalfa, and sometimes straw.  Some horses eat the weirdest things.  Some horses drink sweet tea, coke, Gatorade, etc.  Some horses eat hamburgers, biscuits, french fries, etc.  Each horse likes other things.  Not all horses like alfalfa.  Some horses can't have it or they'll colic.

Being with the herd

Horses are herd animals.  They hate being by themselves.  When owners do have only one horse, they get a goat or a cat to keep the horse company.  In the wild, the lead horse will chase any horse out of the herd if it does something wrong.  This makes the horse feel unsafe and it will want to join the herd.  Horses smack their lips to signal the other horses that they are sorry.  When they do this, the lead horse will let the horse back into the herd.  We do the same thing when we lunge a horse around a round pen. We are keeping them away from us just as the lead horse would.  They will feel unsafe and lonely on the outside of the ring.  When they smack their lips and put their head down, that is when we let them come to us.
